ipod and PCLinuxOS (2007)

By: Shailesh Singh | 10 Sep 2008 10:07 pm

I was wondering if any one could help me. I cannot get my ipod to work at all in Linux. I have been using various distros for over two
years and I have every other piece of hardware working. I have Wine and it gives me various error messages whenever I try to run itunes.
(Mostly concerning quicktime). I have installed older releases of itunes to no avail.

The system recognizes my physical ipod and even identifies correctly, so it's not hardware related. I just cant find an app to
transfer songs to it. I have tried Banshee, Gtkpod, Amarok, and a couple of others that I have forgotten about with no success.

Any suggestions or solutions I would appreciate as I would like to get this last piece of the puzzle working and say good bye to Windows.

I was able to get my old ipod working with both Amarok and gtkpod. I must say that Amarok will be much easier to setup and interface with. If I'm not mistaken, PCLinuxOS uses the KDE desktop. If that's the case, you probably have Amarok already installed. See the following ling for it's supported models.

And here is a how-to for interfacing with an ipod in PClinuxOS 2007 using Amarok:

Or if you must have itunes, you could download the trial version of crossover office. I was able to install both itunes and Windows Media Player 9 under this app. Unfortunately, I did not test itunes ability to interface with my ipod.

There is some confusion on my part. You say that your iPod works under Linux, but you can\'t use iTunes which is software. Is this a correct assessment?

There are many reasons why it does not work and probably never will. Also reasons why you may find it difficult getting help from Linux users and Linux developers to make it work. Apple and Linux are on polar extremes of the issue of DRM and proprietary software solutions. Linux users tend towards the freedom end and resist anything that smacks of proprietary solutions and infringement of rights, especially regarding who owns your computer, music player or music. You may have noticed.

Here is what most users use: http://techlogg. com/index. php?option= com_content& task=view& id=371&Itemid= 9

and http://www.techvat. com/why-itunes- will-never- come-to-linux. html

Linux will probably never have an iTunes client that works. ITunes will install in Wine, but won\'t work, so you cna give up trying. But just know that you are striking a blow for freedom when you refuse to buy into the whole iTunes thing. There are open source friendly music stores as well.

BTW, you can install Linux on your iPod: http://www.youtube. com/watch? v=U_ZKaXN_ s0g

Now the iPod can be made into something truly cool courtesy of iPod Linux.
