Using two monitors

I am using a somewhat vintage (DDR RAM, 2 GHZ processor) MB with  built-in video. I added a video card and a second monitor. The
original monitor remained dark, and the vid board/second monitor was used.

I could not get both cards to work at once. Is there a trick to that,  or is it simply not done?
